Dumpster Rental vs Junk Removal vs Dumpster Bags

Updated 2026-10-24

There are three common ways to get a large pile of debris off your property: rent a roll-off dumpster, hire a junk removal crew, or buy a dumpster bag. They differ in who does the lifting, how much they hold and how fast the job is done. Prices and rules vary by company and city, so use the examples below as a guide and get local quotes.

How each one works

Roll-off dumpster. A hauler drops a steel container at your home, you fill it over the rental period, and the hauler takes it away. Republic Services, for example, says it delivers within three days, rents for 9 days, and will usually pick up by 6 p.m. the next day if you call by 4 p.m. Republic’s size guide runs from 10 to 40 cubic yards and puts a 10 yard at about 4 pickup truck loads and a 40 yard at about 16. See dumpster sizes explained for the full range.

Junk removal. A crew comes to your home, gives a price on site, loads everything and hauls it away. 1-800-GOT-JUNK? prices in 1/8 increments of the truck and says its price includes removal from anywhere, all loading and clean-up, and disposal and environmental fees. College Hunks Hauling Junk also prices by the volume your items take up in its truck and offers a same-day or next-day option.

Dumpster bag. You buy a fold-up bag at a store, fill it yourself, then schedule a pickup and pay a collection fee. The Bagster maker says to buy the bag at a local home improvement store and look up collection fees by ZIP code. Its FAQ says the bag holds 3 cubic yards and up to 3,300 pounds, measures 8 by 4 by 2.5 feet, and is typically collected within five business days of the bag ready date you choose.

Sources for the table: Republic Services, 5280 Waste Solutions, 1-800-GOT-JUNK?, College Hunks Hauling Junk and the Bagster FAQ. The 400 cubic feet comes from 1-800-GOT-JUNK?’s full truckload of 10 by 5 by 8 feet; College Hunks puts its full truckload at about 440 cubic feet. That works out to roughly 15 to 16 cubic yards, so a full junk truck holds about as much as a 15 yard dumpster by volume.

Labor

This is the biggest difference. With a dumpster or a bag, you or your contractor do all the carrying and loading. 1-800-GOT-JUNK? makes the same point, noting that with a dumpster you’ll have to do all the heavy lifting on your own and need space to park it, possibly with a special permit to keep it on the street.

With junk removal, the crew carries items out from wherever they are. If you cannot lift heavy furniture, or the items are upstairs or in a basement, that labor is what you are paying for.

Timing

A dumpster suits projects that produce debris over days or weeks, such as a remodel or a roof tear-off. Rental periods vary: Republic Services quotes 9 days, and Dumpster Brothers in Atlanta prices on a standard 14 day rental. See how long can you keep a dumpster.

Junk removal suits debris that is already sitting there. 1-800-GOT-JUNK? says that once you accept the price, the crew removes the items right away with no need for a follow-up appointment.

A dumpster bag lets you fill at your own pace, but pickup is not instant. The Bagster FAQ says collection is typically within five business days, Monday through Friday from 6 a.m. to 8 p.m.

What drives the cost

Dumpsters are usually a flat price for a size, a rental period and a weight allowance. Dumpster Brothers in Atlanta lists a 10 yard with 1 ton included and a 20 yard at $495 with 2 tons included, and charges a prorated amount if you go over. Minneapolis haulers list 20 yards from $490 to $555 (Nordic Waste, A1 Hauling and Rolloffs). A street permit adds cost: in Chicago it is $50 for 1 to 3 days for a box of 30 cubic yards or less outside the Central Business District. More detail is in how much does a dumpster rental cost and how to avoid dumpster overage fees.

Junk removal is priced by how much truck space you use. 1-800-GOT-JUNK? published 2025 averages of $107 to $396 for a minimum to quarter load, $396 to $600 for a quarter to half load, and $600 to $1,099 for a half to full load. It says prices vary from city to city with factors such as dump costs and transportation, and that some companies charge extra for mattresses, electronics, appliances and tires, or for stairs and long carries. College Hunks says its rates are location based and that items such as tires and paint may carry extra disposal fees.

Dumpster bags cost the bag plus a collection fee that depends on where you live; the maker says the fee is paid upon scheduling and that bags typically cost less than renting a metal dumpster.

Placement and what you can put in

A dumpster needs room for the truck and the box. Republic Services asks for an area accessible to its delivery trucks with no low-hanging tree limbs or overhead wires. On the street, many cities require a permit; see do you need a dumpster permit.

A dumpster bag has stricter rules. The Bagster FAQ says it must sit on your property only, not on public sidewalks or streets, at least 5 feet from any structures or vehicles, with its center no more than 16 feet from the edge of the street, alley or driveway, and with 18 feet of vertical clearance for the truck. It also cannot take paint, oil, batteries, appliances, electronics, tires or medical waste.

Dumpsters have banned items too; see what you cannot put in a dumpster. Some junk removal companies take items a dumpster cannot. College Hunks lists appliances, electronics and mattresses among items that may carry additional charges.

Which one fits

  • Choose a dumpster for a multi-day project with a lot of debris and a driveway to put it on, such as a kitchen remodel or a roof tear-off.
  • Choose junk removal when the items are already in the house, you want someone else to lift them, or you want it done in one visit, as in many move-out and estate cleanouts.
  • Choose a dumpster bag for a small job under 3 cubic yards, with space on your own property near the street and no rush on pickup.
