How Much Does a Dumpster Rental Cost?

Updated 2026-10-24

Most roll-off dumpster rentals are quoted as one price for a container size, a set number of days and a set amount of weight. Prices posted by haulers often run from about $250 for a small box to $900 or more for the largest (5280 Waste Solutions). Where you land depends on size, how long you keep it, how heavy your debris is and where you live (Republic Services, Red Roll Off Containers).

Typical prices by size

Size Typical price Rental period Weight often included
10 yard $250 to $500 7 to 10 days 1 to 2 tons
15 yard $375 to $550 5 to 7 days 1.5 to 3 tons
20 yard $350 to $600 7 to 10 days 2 to 3 tons
30 yard $400 to $800 7 to 10 days 3 to 4 tons
40 yard $550 to $900 or more 7 to 10 days 4 to 6 tons

These ranges come from published hauler prices, including 5280 Waste Solutions, Easy Waste Management, Apex Waste NJ, Red Roll Off Containers, Dumpsters Now, Haul’n Off and Dump It KC. They are typical, not guaranteed. Not sure which size you need? Start with dumpster sizes explained.

Local prices can differ a lot

The same size can cost very different amounts from city to city. Posted prices for a 20 yard rental include:

Location drives price through the distance to the nearest landfill or transfer station, local landfill costs and city-specific fees (Republic Services).

What the price usually includes

A standard quote usually covers delivery, pickup, a rental period (often 7 to 10 days), a weight allowance and disposal of that weight (5280 Waste Solutions). Others list base rates and note that taxes, fuel surcharges or environmental fees may apply (Nordic Waste Management), or list a lower starting price and bill disposal after pickup (Summit Waste).

Flat rate versus “haul plus ton”

Haulers price in two main ways:

  • Flat rate. One price covers delivery, pickup, days and a set weight. You pay more only if you add days or go over weight (Dump It KC).
  • Haul plus ton. A lower base price, with disposal billed by weight after pickup. For example, one Florida hauler lists a 10 yard from $249 for 7 days, with disposal billed after pickup at $100 per ton (Summit Waste).

To compare the two, work out the total you would pay for your expected weight and days, not just the advertised number.

What drives the price

Size

Bigger boxes cost more, but often not by much. One Georgia hauler charges $390 for a 15 yard and $440 for a 20 yard for 7 days (Red Roll Off Containers). One Kansas City hauler’s 3 day prices work out to about $15.50 per cubic yard for a 30 yard against $28.64 for its smallest box (Dump It KC).

Rental length

Longer rentals cost more. One Georgia hauler charges $390, $440 or $490 for a 20 yard kept 3, 7 or 14 days (Red Roll Off Containers). Extra days are often $10 to $25 each (5280 Waste Solutions). More in how long you can keep a dumpster.

Weight

Landfills charge by weight, so rentals include a set number of tons (Dump It KC), and heavier materials can increase costs (Republic Services). Overage rates vary widely. Published examples include $75 per ton (Red Roll Off Containers), $125 per ton (A1 Hauling and Rolloffs), $130 per ton (Apex Waste NJ) and $165 per ton (Haul’n Off). If a rate is quoted per pound, convert it: one Kansas City hauler’s $0.07 per pound works out to $140 per ton (Dump It KC).

Debris type

Heavy material is often priced separately. One New Jersey hauler prices clean concrete from $599 and dirt or clean fill from $1,150 per load, each with 3 tons included (Apex Waste NJ). Some items carry their own fees, such as $75 per mattress, $50 per appliance and $40 per tire at one Minneapolis-area hauler (Nordic Waste Management). Check what you cannot put in a dumpster before you load.

Delivery distance

Many quotes include delivery only within a set radius. One hauler includes 15 road miles, then adds $50 up to 25 miles and $110 up to 40 miles (Apex Waste NJ). Another includes 30 miles and charges $3 per extra mile on each of the four trips a rental takes (Dump It KC).

Permits

On your own driveway you usually do not need a permit, though your HOA may have rules (Republic Services). On the street, many cities charge for one:

Add-on fees

Some quotes leave out fuel or environmental fees (Nordic Waste Management). One Denver hauler puts typical fuel or delivery surcharges at $25 to $75 and environmental fees at $15 to $50 (5280 Waste Solutions). Card processing fees also exist, such as 3% at one San Diego company (Haul’n Off).

A worked example

One New Jersey hauler shows how charges add up. A 15 yard at $549 includes 2 tons and 7 days. If the load weighs 3 tons, add $130. If you keep it 9 days, add $50 for two extra days. The total is $729 (Apex Waste NJ).

Questions to ask before you book

  • How many tons are included, and what is the rate per ton after that?
  • How many days are included, and what does each extra day cost?
  • Are there fuel, environmental or administrative fees?
  • Is my address inside the free delivery area?

One Denver hauler suggests asking for the all-in price, including delivery, pickup, disposal and your weight allowance (5280 Waste Solutions). For ways to keep extras off your bill, read how to avoid dumpster overage fees.
