How Long Can You Keep a Rental Dumpster?
Updated 2026-10-24
Most roll-off rentals include a set number of days, often about a week, and charge a daily rate after that (5280 Waste Solutions). The included period, the extension rules and the daily fee all vary by company, so check them before you book. If the dumpster will sit on the street, the permit has its own time limit too.
Typical rental periods
Published terms from a range of haulers:
| Hauler (area) | Included period | Extra day |
|---|---|---|
| Republic Services (national, online orders) | 9 days | extension by contacting customer service |
| 5280 Waste Solutions (Denver) | 7 days | daily rate, amount not posted |
| Apex Waste NJ (New Jersey) | 7 days | $25 |
| A1 Hauling and Rolloffs (Minneapolis) | 7 days | $20 |
| Clean Green Hauling (San Diego) | 7 days, drop-off day not counted | $35 |
| Haul’n Off (San Diego) | 1 day for 15 and 20 yard, 7 days for 30 and 40 yard | $95 |
| Dump Daddy (Atlanta area) | 7 days | $25, up to 7 extra days |
| Dumpster Brothers (Atlanta) | 14 days | extended terms on request |
Hauler pages in Denver and Los Angeles describe 7 to 10 days as the typical standard period (5280 Waste Solutions, Easy Waste Management). If a project like a kitchen remodel runs four days past a 7 day rental, a $25 daily rate adds $100 (Red Roll Off Containers).
Shorter and longer options
Some haulers let you pick the length and price it accordingly. One Georgia company charges $390 for a 20 yard for 3 days, $440 for 7 days and $490 for 14 days (Red Roll Off Containers). A Kansas City hauler offers 1, 3, 5, 7, 10 and 14 day rentals. Its 10 yard is $315 for 3 days, $415 for 7 and $590 for 14 (Dump It KC). Its 1 day “express” costs more than 3 days, because delivery and pickup happen the same day.
Look at the step between periods. When the jump from 7 to 14 days is small, as in the Georgia example ($50), booking the longer period can cost less than paying for extra days later.
Extending a rental
Most companies will extend for a daily fee (5280 Waste Solutions). Typical published rates:
- $25 per day at several haulers (Red Roll Off Containers, Apex Waste NJ, Dump Daddy)
- $10 to $25 per day, or $50 to $100 for an extra week, in one hauler’s overview of the market (Easy Waste Management)
- $95 per day at one San Diego company (Haul’n Off)
Some companies cap extensions. One Atlanta-area hauler allows up to 7 additional days (Dump Daddy), while another says it can accommodate as many extra days as you need (Dumpster Brothers).
Ask before the scheduled pickup, not after. Extra time is subject to availability, and haulers want it confirmed in advance (Haul’n Off, A1 Hauling and Rolloffs). For other charges that show up at the end of a rental, see how to avoid dumpster overage fees.
Finishing early
You can usually call for pickup as soon as you are done. One Denver hauler says you can call for an early pickup at no penalty (5280 Waste Solutions). Do not expect money back for unused days, though. One hauler gives no refund for unused days but offers a 5% discount if you ask for pickup at least 24 hours before your scheduled pickup day (Dump It KC).
Pickup is not always same day. Republic Services asks for a call by 4 p.m. and usually picks up by 6 p.m. the following day (Republic Services).
Swaps: when one dumpster is not enough
On a long or large project, you may fill the container before you finish. Instead of renting a second one, you can often have it hauled, emptied and brought back. Republic Services says it can return the dumpster to you empty (Republic Services).
Each swap is an extra haul, and it is priced that way:
- Dump It KC lists a “dump and return” price for each size, such as $390 for a 20 yard (Dump It KC).
- The City of Wichita Falls, Texas, which rents its own 10 yard roll-offs, charges $48.50 to dump and return a container, plus $8 per rental day and landfill charges by the ton (City of Wichita Falls).
- Haul’n Off requires any swap or extra haul to be confirmed in a written quote (Haul’n Off).
If you expect a swap, ask whether the new load gets its own weight allowance. A second haul usually costs more than stepping up a size (Dump It KC), so a larger box from the start may be cheaper. See dumpster sizes explained.
Street permits have their own clock
On your driveway or other private property, you generally do not need a permit, though your HOA may have rules (Republic Services). On a public street, many cities issue permits for a set term:
- Minneapolis: $84.20 for 30 days, $168.40 for 60 days or $252.60 for 90 days, counted from the day the permit is issued (City of Minneapolis)
- Denver: $125 for the first 5 days, then $4.50 per day (Denver DOTI). A container cannot stay in the right-of-way more than 180 days in any 12-month period, and processing takes about 5 business days (Denver DOTI).
- Chicago: 1 to 3 day or monthly permits. Staying past the permitted time requires amending the permit and adjusting the fee (Chicago DOT).
- Washington, DC: a $50 application fee plus $75 per month for months 1 to 3, with higher rates from month 4 (DDOT)
- Atlanta: a $20 fixed fee plus $10 per day for 100 feet or less (City of Atlanta)
- Seattle: to reserve the curb space with a temporary No Parking zone, the public notice must be posted at least 72 hours before the dumpster is placed (Seattle DOT)
If your project runs long, the permit may expire before the rental does. Match the two, and read do you need a dumpster permit for more.
How to pick the right length
- Count the days you will actually load, including weekends.
- Add a buffer for weather or contractor delays.
- Compare the price of a longer period against daily extension fees.
- Line up the permit term with the rental if the box is on the street.
