How the data is built
The current dataset was built on 2026-10-24 and holds 5,702 companies in 710 cities across the 25 largest US metro areas. 0 cities have sourced permit or price facts so far.
Business listings
Listings come from Overture Maps Places, release 2026-10-21.0, an open dataset of places contributed by Meta, Microsoft, and others. We keep places whose category is dumpster rental or junk removal and hauling, plus waste collection, rental and home-service businesses whose names mention dumpsters, roll-offs, containers, bins, hauling, or disposal. Movers, truckers and general contractors count only when the name says dumpster, roll-off, junk, debris, bins or containers. Wastewater plants, medical waste services, e-waste recyclers, drug take-back sites, scrap yards, truck rental, landfills, and government offices are excluded. The rules and their tests are in the repository (pipeline/category_filter.py).
Each place is matched to the nearest city of at least 25,000 people (U.S. Census Bureau Vintage 2024 estimates) within 40 km. Duplicates are merged when two records share a normalized name within 300 meters, a phone number within 50 km, a website domain within 5 km, or the same name and website domain within 50 km. Permanently closed places are dropped.
We never use Google Maps or Yelp data, and we do not copy listings from other directories.
How ranking works
Companies on a city page are ranked by points for recorded information. Nobody can pay to move up the ranked list; paid placement appears only in the separate slot marked Featured.
- Source confidence (0 to 1, from Overture): up to 30 points
- Website on record: 15
- Phone on record: 15
- Dumpster sizes recorded from the company's own site: 10
- Listed on a government hauler registry: 15
- Names this city in its service area: 10
- Categorized as dumpster rental: 10
- Based in this city: 5
- National lead-gen broker or virtual-office listing network (one website and call center behind dozens of "local" records): -15. They stay listed and are marked Broker; verified local companies rank above them.
Records with confidence under 0.5 are shown in a collapsed "low source confidence" list.
Permit rules and prices
Street permit rules, fees, and issuing offices come from each city's own website and are quoted with a link. Local price ranges need at least two published company rate pages, each linked with the date we read it. When we have not recorded a fact, the page says so. We do not estimate.
Which pages search engines see
City pages are open to search engines when at least 3 companies are based in the city or a sourced city fact exists. Company pages are open when the record has a website plus two facts sourced from the company's own site or a cited source (sizes, service area, prices, same-day, residential or commercial), or a registry entry. Thinner pages stay visible to people but are marked noindex until more data arrives.
Corrections
Companies can claim or fix a listing. A person checks every change against the company's website or a public record.
